Getting pre-approved through a local lender is one of the best ways to strengthen your position as a buyer. Not only will you get very competitive rates and great service throughout the transaction but your offer to purchase a home will appear more credible than another buyer who chooses to go with some obscure non-local mortgage lender who no one can trust to get the job done. Even the large retail lenders with centralized loan origination and processing teams are not always the best way to go. Those types of lenders usually only work 9 to 5 hours and when there are problems it is difficult to hold one person accountable.

Getting pre-approved on the phone should take minutes not days!

A pre-qualification or pre-approval letter from a bonifide mortgage lender is necessary. when submitting an offer on a property. Some Realtors prefer that their buyers are already pre-qualified or pre-approved before looking at homes because it cuts down any wasted time looking at homes that are outside of the buyer's price range. (either too low or too high). In fact, most sellers are told by their listing agents that only pre-qualified buyers will come visit their homes. So it is important to know exactly what you can afford before looking at homes.
